Snow Shuts Down City!

Chris braves the abandoned rail crossing at Thalia Creek.

It snowed this weekend! Yes. It snowed in Virginia Beach and it actually stayed. As I write, there is snow on the ground and ice on the roads. In fact, VB City Public Schools were closed yesterday and today. Indeed.

Chris and I woke up early Saturday morning and walked to Krispie Kreme Doughnuts. I had some coupons that were about to expire, and what better way to seize a snowy day than with a blustery walk to consume hot coffee and warm glazed doughnuts? The walk was such a success, that on our way home we even stopped at Gordon Biersch for a beer. Unfortunately, we were some of the only people who decided to leave the house and stomp around in the snow. If the City were more accessible by means other than motorized vehicles, everything wouldn't need to shut down for a measly snowfall. I imagine that most businesses in Virginia Beach lost money this weekend. Many people were not willing to leave the security of their homes to drive on icy, un-plowed roads. If the light rail were in place, those living in walking distance to the rail line could hop on over to Town Center, Downtown Norfolk, or the Oceanfront to sip hot cocoa, a beer, shop, or consume a wintery portion of carb-loaded food in the good company of others.

I believe that Virginia Beach/South Hampton Roads residents want more transportation options, but we need to speak up! Contact your City Manager and tell him/her what you want.

Walking in Virginia Beach

OK. So, it's been more than 3 months since my last post, and I believe that it's time to be more consistent with this new blog. I walked to a temp agency today in Virginia Beach. I had to walk under a busy underpass...on top of wood pallets that some nice person left for pedestrians, though the disgusting, dirty, probably urine-soaked mud still managed to seep through to my keds. Gross. However, there is a plan for a pedestrian bridge over I-264 so one need not use this terrible route in the future. I am going to venture back to this space and take pictures and post them for your pleasure.

New Blog

Since I'm transitioning to a new phase of my life, I decided to transition to a new blog. Ta Da! My mind is currently obsessed with finding a job, and I'm hoping that this will be a nice outlet for me to write for fun.

Love,
Christy
